Generative AI Weekly - May 23, 2024

Following Google and OpenAI model announcements, Sober AI, and simulations.

This week:

  • Moderna and OpenAI case study. "Moderna’s objective was to achieve 100% adoption and proficiency of generative AI by all its people with access to digital solutions in six months." And "Within two months of the ChatGPT Enterprise adoption: [...] Each user has 120 ChatGPT Enterprise conversations per week on average".
  • Ethan Mollick on GPT4o. "Figuring out how to get employees to share what they are developing (and managing security and risks) will be a challenge for many organizations."
  • This coming after last week's note - "A Plea for Sober AI," discussing the over-marketing-ification of AI. "But steadily, quietly, Sober AI users and products are going to remake so much. If we dial back the hype, I bet we’ll get there faster."
  • A true aspect of the internet that I think most folks in marketing and comms ignore is that many of the places we publish content are "eerily devoid of human life." This will just expand—in many cases due to marketers racing to the bottom.
  • From over a year ago - "The End of Programming"
  • I recently came across an old post from John Cook with a rule regarding automation that I think is very relevant given new tooling available. Well ahead of its time: "The less often you run a script, the chattier the interface should be."
  • A tool I am trying - Granola. An expanding notepad for meetings.
  • Sundar Pichai on a podcast responding to concerns about AI integration into search. Very worth the time! "Through this AI moment, over time, there’ll be players who will do better by the content creators that support their platforms, and whoever does it better will emerge as the winner. I believe that to be a tenet of these things over time."
  • Time for some more Photoshop painting with an AI "amplifier"!
  • I've previously linked to some research about generative agents. You can simulate and play some "games" with these agents. I am still very intrigued about what this means for market research and concept testing! For this weekend, spinning up a simulation is the plan!
